1. Appropriate Placement of Patients
One of the main reason that causes longer stays of a patient in a hospital is the improper assigning of beds. This in due course results in having the patient treated by the wrong staff member and providing inappropriate care. The top priority of every hospital is to ensure that the life of their patients is not at any risk, but this mistake can put it at a risk. This mistake can, however, be corrected by allocating the right bed to the right patient. To make the allocation process easier, a simple algorithmic or dynamic algorithmic method is used.
2. Don’t Delay Patient Discharge
If you keep a patient longer than they actually need to be, you are ultimately causing the hospital to spend more money and increasing the length of stay for that patient. So, do not keep the patients unnecessarily in the hospital and schedule their discharge as soon as possible. Make everyone from your staff involved in it because teamwork is very effective in this cause. Neither does a patient find it pleasing to stay in a hospital nor does it do any good to the hospital itself. Follow this tactic and reduce the hospital stays for patients.
3. Keep a Track on Patients’ Progress
Take around every day of the ward and have a look at every patient’s progress. In this way, you would have a proper track on each patient’s health progress which would help in scheduling their discharge depending on their condition.
4. Manage the Inpatient Census
You never know when would the inpatient census goes high but you should know that the increase in it can cause some snags in the management of patient accommodation. Though, you can overcome this issue by forecasting patients count by looking at past censuses. It is very important to predict as close value as you can so that you can manage everything consequently. There are different software or machines that can accurately predict the spikes inpatient census, all you’d have to do is enter the exact data into it.
5. Increase the Hours of Operations
Another way to reduce the hospital stays is an increase in the hours of operation because a lot of patients tend to stay longer in the hospital beds because they haven’t received their test results as the labs are generally closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Thus, to reduce the length of stay, have the laboratories opened for at least half a day or increase their operational hours so that there are no delays in the test results of the patients. Not only this, but some departments can also require auxiliary staff to manage the workload.
6. Motivate Staff Nurses to Help
There are several things that nurses can easily do to reduce the hospital stays for example;
- Transfer patients from ICU to their room or ward immediately
- Inform the case managers if a discharged patient requires conveyance to their home
- Determine the cause of delay in discharge and tell the case manager
- Enlighten the case manager if there is either rapid progress or delayed progress in a patient’s condition than expected
7. Use PACS or DICOM Cloud
If you want quick and east medical data retrieval, it’s better to use a PACS or DICOM cloud. You can contact any PACS or RIS vendors for that.
So, how to choose a service provider for medical data security? Type RIS vendors or PACS cloud providers and read reviews of customers. You can also ask about better services from senior colleagues.
